427 hectares or 10% of the city of Lyon, the second biggest city in France and over two thousand years old, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As a forward-looking city it is deploying one of the largest urban regeneration projects in the central Confluence district where the brand new Musée des Confluences opened at the start of 2015. LYON is known worldwide as the capital of French gastronomy both for its culinary tradition and its numerous starred chefs in the heart of a region producing the best products. Lyon has the second largest reception capacity in France for Business tourism events with its 4 reception sites: the Cité Centre de Congrès, Eurexpo, Halle Tony Garnier and Double Mixte, and it has 17,000 rooms.
WHAT'S NEW ?
The conversion of the Grand Hotel Dieu started in 2017. It will host an Intercontinental resort hotel with 143 rooms and a convention centre of 2740sq meters. The first section of the Grand Hôtel-Dieu will open next spring with eagerly awaited new arrivals in Lyon, such as the famous Buddha Bar and Clarins, which will set up its all-new concept store. In terms of hotel accomadation, the countdown until the opening of the InterContinental hotel within the end of 2018 has begun. The Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie will open its doors to the public in spring 2019.
BUDDING CHEFS Designed like a village, and located in a 1500 m² former carpentry shop in Gerland, La Commune is opening soon, thanks to the unshakable enthusiasm of Déborah Hirigoyen (from the firm Archimix), Damien Beaufils (Urban Project) and Damien Doublet (who helped find investors). A fully fledged food hall and incubator for young talent, La Commune will host 15 new resident chefs each year, selected by Chef Philippe Escaich. Shared facilities, a 400 m² central kitchen and a dining area with a capacity for 250 diners will provide an opportunity for each one of these culinary artisans to experiment with their craft. A welcoming space open to all, La Commune will also be available to host corporate events every day of the week, with a stage, conference room(capacity of 200 people in a theatre-style layout, 270 for a cocktail event and 100 for a seated dinner), and 500 m² terrace, providing plenty of potential to imagine innovative events.
KOPSTER HOTEL Lavorel Hotels’ fourth establishment will open at the end of 2018, located at the heart of the Olympique Lyonnais football club’s Groupama Stadium. The group has decided to create a singular identity of its future three-star hotel. The Kopster hotel (namedi in honour of the supporters’ passion and spirit) will feature a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, in keeping with that of the stadium. 140 rooms will lead out directly onto the central aisle and 240m² of modular seminar space (6 rooms) will be provided. This superb meeting venue will also include a restaurant, bar and 132 m² terrace.
Meininger Hostel- NEW GENERATION The German hotel chain Meininger has chosen Lyon as the latest destination for its low cost and designer hotel concept. Located in the 7th district, between the Jean Macé and Lyon Perrache train stations, this establishment will offer standard double rooms, as well as beds in dorm rooms. Facilities provided by the hotel will include a shared kitchen, games area, launderette and breakfast service. The Lumières-themed decorative scheme, inspired by Lyon’s famous Lumière Brothers and Fête des Lumières, the green roof and urban gardens will combine to create a singular personality for this new place of lodging. Opening planned in the third quarter of 2019.
